I have come to the realization that there are certain kinds of people that interest me, and certain types of people that do not. Of course everybody is like this, but I have finally put a label on my own peculiarities. I happen to like Musicians, Writers and Hippies.
I think maybe my next book will be called “Musicians, Writers and Hippies.” No idea what it will be about, but I like it for a title.
I also like “Quit Your Day Job” because everyone is always telling you NOT to quit your day job, so wouldn’t it be great if you were in a situation that was so full of hope and promise that people actually encouraged you to quit your day job?
I also like “Odd Job,” though not quite sure what that book would be about either.
I’m pretty good at thinking up titles for books and names for bands, but not as good as I’d like to be at writing the books that go with those titles or the songs to be sung by those bands.
Anyway, here is the question. What is a Hippie? I looked it up in Webster’s, and the definition was painfully lacking. Something like this: a usually young person who adopts unconventional beliefs or practices. Okay. Going by that, anyone who believes the moon is made of green cheese and likes to go horseback riding in their pajamas would be considered a hippie. I don’t think that definition quite cuts it. Joey had a better definition, shorter and more to the point: “Peaceful Rebel.”
Any other ideas?
HIPPIES DEFINED
I feel compelled to comment on my own journal entry, because I just went to wikipedia.com and looked up hippie, and boy does that give you a lot more information than Webster!
Go, Wikipedia!
Re: HIPPIES DEFINED
That’s what I was going to suggest, but looks like you beat me to it. ^_^ I think a hippie is a person who most closely fits the “hippie” stereotypes of 60’s style clothes, peace symbols, a laid back style and a keen interest in promoting peace while still opposing things they don’t believe in. That’s much too specific for a definition in a dictionary, but that’s how I see it anyway.
Re: HIPPIES DEFINED
I told you! Wikipedia is a gift from Heaven…it has everything!
I like “Quit Your Day Job”. That sounds cool, like it would be about people who suddenly realized their day jobs were horrible and boring and started a revolution of tons of people leaving their office jobs to be painters and subway musicians and stuff. ^_^
But then drama and horror would ensure because there would be no secretaries to organize the companies and no police officers to prevent crimes and no restaurant workers to make food and no store clerks. If everyone quit their day job it would be MADNESS!!!! MADNESS!!!!

That’s why it would be interesting! People would be torn between doing what they love and helping the economy or whatever. Plus not EVERYONE would quit, so people would be choosing sides and arguing and questioning their standards, and a lot of the people left in the companies would be greedy bureaucrats and their lackeys, and confused people who don’t know if they want to sacrifice security and money to do what they love to do. A sort of politician vs. paparazzi-esque conundrum. And what if they just like office work or waitressing or whatnot? They’d prolly get a lot of flak from their free spirited friends. And then the people who started this movement would be in the eye of the media, meaning they can’t even lead the bohemian lives they originally wanted. And possibly in a lot of trouble with the bigwigs who are running out of lackeys and it’s all their fault. It would be interesting! Madness is always interesting!
I think you girls are definately on the right track with this as far as a story for a novel. I hadn’t thought it out that far. But maybe this could be the amkings of a 50,000 word Nano?
LMAO! Oh god! Paparrazzi and politician. π lol But yeah, chaos IS interesting I guess. However, I just realized that is almost like saying DRAMA is interesting! lol π j/k
Anyway, it would make a good story. My mom should write it….and it will be good…and 500,000 words long! BWAHAHAHA!
Heh heh. I think Joey was right on when he said that. ::pun intended::
Anyway, I find that all people interest me in some ways but not in others. Like, everyone has their good points and their bad points. For example, hippies are down to earth and peaceful, but they are also slackery pot heads a lot of the time. Similarly, musicians are artistic and talented and entertaining, but they tend to be a bit obsessive and fall too easily into the whole musician “scene”
Essentially, what I think it is is this…for me, I like people as individuals and it is entirely unbiased towards stereotypes. I like certain people who have the qualities I enjoy to be around regardless of what they are labeled as. Not all hippies are pot heads, but a lot are. So you can’t say you like ALL Hippies if you don’t like pot heads, right? Not to mention, not all pot heads are assholes. I havent yet but its possible I might meet a pot head who isnt so bad. I doubt it though. I hate drugs with a pretty strong conviction. π
If I had to pick a genre that I generally DO like, I’d say geeks/nerds/dorks interest me the most.
Hooray for you posting! Keep it up! π
I agree! About the geeks. And about the potheads, tho in college I did know some potheads that were in fact interesting people. My roommate Dave was a total pothead and he was the nicest guy. (Later became a lawyer in San Francisco and owned a cat named Winston who could make every bone in his body disappear when you picked him up.) And I think I’ve told you about his friend Neil who was going for his PhD in math and liked to get high and do math. If I was going to get high, I certainly wouldn’t waste it on MATH!
Anyway, this character Neil gave me an idea for a storyline I was writing one time for the original Star Trek crew, where Mr. Spock was in charge of a bunch of college-type anthropology students who were studying the culture on a certain distsant planet, and the kids were wondering what Spock would be like if he got high, so they spiked the soup with whatever the popular drug of that planet was, and he spent the whole night doing math. Ha ha!
Maybe I could dig up this story for Nano. Now that I am almost done with my novel, I am beginning to wonder what I will do for Nano. I guess I have time, but I am beginning to think. Are you allowed to write stories that involve pre-existing characters?
This comment made me laugh out loud! π
Do MATH!?!?!? Freak…
And no you’re not I think. That’s considered fan fiction. You can write it on FanFiction.net though. π
Hey! Maybe I’ll do that!
