IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT SIDE SALAD: NEWK’S

Very close to the University there is a trendy restaurant called Newk’s. It serves mostly sandwiches, salads, soups, and has some of the very BEST iced tea in town, which is served in a HUGE cup. There is also a large round table full of condiments, which includes tall thin packages of breadsticks, which are extremely tasty. Whenever I watch Glee, and everyone on that show gets so excited about going to the restaurant “Breadsticks,” it makes me think of Newk’s.

When Mary lived here we went to Newk’s a few times, mainly for their lobster bisque, which they serve regularly on Friday. Not enough can be said about this lobster bisque. And the fact that they serve it in a red bowl makes it even better.

However, I am here to talk about the salad. Going to Newks on Friday night, I discovered they have a combo special for soup and salad. Of course I chose the lobster bisque, and my salad, also served in a red bowl, was not bad either. One thing for sure, this was not a skimpy salad! There was plenty of it. It wasn’t the best salad I’ve ever had, with some of the greens having that “too green” taste I’ve talked about before, but there were a lot of different varieties of lettuce, including some purple lettuce (for visual interest), and cucumbers, and a little bit of shredded cheese. Large croutons also graced this salad, but I mostly avoided them. Partly because I’m trying to avoid breads, but also because I had one or two, and they were not as tasty as croutons can be. The felt hard and stale, so it was easy to avoid them.

So the salad was good, but not great. It’s the lobster bisque makes this combo meal well worth the modest price. And if you go, don’t forget to help yourself to a huge cup of iced tea with fresh lemon!
