HAIL, MARY, AND OTHER THINGS

March was a very busy month for us. First, we spent our Spring Break organizing the entire comics collection. It’s all done now, but one step remains—we need to catalog it all, which means creating a list that details what’s in each of the 103 boxes. No, not each and every comic! We would be writing that list forever! Just what’s the first and last comic in each box. Since they’re all in impeccable alphabetical order, a “map” like this would make it easy to find any particular comic in mere moments.

Are we organized, or WHAT??

Only a few days after Spring Break, Mary came for a visit. She’s on her way to Seattle, making a month long trip of it, seeing all the sights along the way. After visiting with her dad, she spent about six days with me and Russ. There was much going out to eat, watching a lot of Leverage (Mary’s new favorite show, thanks to me!) and it just so happened that her visit coincided with the Air Show at the nearby Tuscaloosa Airport, featuring the Blue Angels.

For the first four days Mary was here, the Blue Angels kept flying over our house, first practicing, and then doing the actual show on Saturday and Sunday. It seems we get this show on an almost yearly basis now, and it never gets old. It’s just planes flying really fast, in perfect formation, but it’s fascinating to watch. And to HEAR. If you can still hear anything after they’ve buzzed your house a thousand times!

maryMary’s wearing her hair bright red these days, and every single day, wherever we went, someone was sure to say, “Oh! I love your hair!” In Starbucks (Mary is a Starbucks fiend, and treated me—twice!), one lady engaged her in a lengthy discussion about hair coloring techniques. One thing for sure: Mary stands out in a crowd!

Then she had to go, and currently she is on the road, somewhere in New Mexico, getting ready to visit the Grand Canyon in a few days. I’m looking forward to her getting to Seattle, finding a nice place to live, she and Ken carting their cats and all their stuff up there and getting settled…so Russ and I can jump on a plane and go visit them! It will probably be a year at least before they’re ready for that. Hey! Maybe on our next Spring Break?

After Mary left, we had a hail storm. I mean..we had a HAIL…STORM. I’ve seen hail a few times in my life, but I have never seen hail like that. Russ has never seen hail like that. Everyone I talked to said they have never seen hail like that. Big as ping pong balls, at least! And so many of them! They were hitting the roof so hard, it sounded like we were under attack! Squee was freaking out.

It only lasted five or ten minutes, but for the next few nights, I was dreaming about hail…or more precisely, about giant snowballs falling out of the sky. I was only glad we were safe in our house when it happened. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to be out on the road in your car. I’m sure Insurance Adjusters were busier than usual after that.

One more thing to report: after so much overindulgence during Spring Break and Mary’s visit, I’ve decided to go back on my “wheat free” eating plan. I’m in day four right now, and feeling fine—in fact, better than usual. I’m reading Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis, and he makes a very sound argument against today’s wheat, which is apparently nothing like the wheat Jesus ate, or even the wheat your grandmother baked with. Two slices of whole wheat break can increase your blood sugar more than two tablespoons of pure cane sugar. You can eat whole wheat bread if you want, just don’t think you’re necessarily eating something “healthy.” Once again, we’re being lied to about our food. What else is new?

There’s a lot of science in this book, studies to back up his case against wheat. I would do this even without the science and the studies, because my own past personal experience has convinced me that I lose weight and feel better when I’m not eating wheat. But now it’s nice to know WHY, and HOW that works.

Oh, wait! One more thing. Russ and I have finally made a decision on our new granite countertops! They should be installed in the next few weeks. After that, the cabinets will be painted, then comes the fun of picking out a coordinating backsplash and maybe some new hardware. I’ll post before and after pics when it’s all done!
