HUMMINGBIRDS

My mother-in-law Marianne told me that hummingbirds will come into your yard if you leave them the right kind of food. I don’t believe I have ever seen a real live hummingbird, so I was intrigued by the possibility of having them in my yard. I bought the food and the feeder and set it up and waited…and waited…and waited…

And a week ago…hummingbirds!

I have seen up to three at one time. Mostly they just like to sit on the pole, but occassionally they come down to eat. They’re very pretty little things, and they do move very fast. I’m just getting such a kick out of having them in my very own backyard.

Don’t you just love wild life in your back yard. It makes you feel like we are not really invading their space but making it more habitable for them—–except for my nemesis the FROGS! Just remember to change the nectar daily as it is mostly sugar water which can cause bacteria and make the birds ill. Good luck with them.

You’ve scared me! I don’t want to make the little birdies ill! But I’m using a nectar from the store (Wal Mart!), and the packaging says nothing about how often to change it, and it does contain a preservative. Probably not the best thing for them (bird candy?), and I’ve done a little research and found you can make your own nectar by boiling sugar and water, so I may start doing that when this bunch is gone. But thanks for the info! I’m marking my Calendar to be sure to change their food every few days, just in case.

And btw, tonight we saw at least FIVE humbirds fluttering around at one time. I think they’re spreading the word to their buddies! And they are getting more bold, flying closer to the patio! 🙂 I may have some more pictures to post soon!

We are fortunate not to have frogs, even though there is a lake relatively nearby. Well, when it rains a lot, we get a couple of teeny-tiny hoppers in the back yard, but not the big bullfrogs jumping at the front door of the house, like I used to have back in Coral Springs! Now, THAT was NO FUN!
