THE JOEY REPORT

I talked to Joey on the phone the other day and he said something that I found interesting, and that made me feel good.

Background: Joey has always lived either with me or with his dad. He’s 22 now, and for the first time in his life, he’s living on his own, with roommates. That in itself is exciting. He’s taking a break from college, working, and practicing with a new band. Two of his bandmates are also his roommates.

Now, with this background, this is what he said: basically, that in the situation he’s in now, he feels himself "growing as a musician." He sounded really excited about this. And it made me feel good that he is excited about this.

It brought back memories of certain times in my life when I have had opportunity to grow either as a writer or as a musician. I remember this, and I remember how good it feels, to set out to do something creative and artistic, and to be aware of personal improvement in your chosen area.

I don’t know how far Joey’s new band will go. On the one hand, they could make it really really big, and he’ll become rich and famous and be able to quit his day-job. Obviously, you don’t make plans around something like this, you just hope for it and welcome it if it comes.

On the other hand, it’s possible that this band will go absolutely nowhere. In which case, hopefully Joey will have enjoyed the learning experience, and get himself back to college.

But either way, at the moment, he seems to be doing well and enjoying himself, and enjoying his opportunity to grow as a musician.

Go, Joey!

    Joey

We should all be able to live life in the moment and enjoy the process. We cannot live for the future, but we can’t live without one either. Keeping a balance between the two is the secret. Right now Joey is doing what he should be doing, growing up and enjoying it.Mom

  2. I like that: we cannot live for the future, but we can’t live without one either. Yes, I agree, it’s all about balance.

I also think “for everything there is a time and a season.” I’d rather see Joey pursue his dreams of being a rock star when he’s 22, rather than when he’s 42! A time and a place for everything.
