Everybody knows that when you go to the movies, it is a good idea to bring a sweater in case the air conditioning is too cold. Years ago I developed a habit of bringing, instead of a movie sweater, a “movie blanket.” I kind of got out of the habit for a while, but I’m taking it up again, and finally it has occurred to me WHY a movie blanket makes so much sense.
Remember when you were a kid, and your parents would tuck you into bed under all your comfy blankets and you would say, “Tell me a story!” And if you were lucky, you would get a really good story to hlep you wind down before bedtime. Well, going to the movies is kind of like that for grown-up kids. You sit down facing the giant screen and say, basically, “Tell me a story!” And if you’re lucky, you get a really good story. So why not be cozied up with a nice blankie while you get your story? For a couple of hours all your troubles go away while you lose yourself in another world. It’s a comfort, an escape, even a mini-vacation. Why not do it up to the max?
That’s such a cool idea! I’m going to try it.
I never really remember being told stories by anyone but myself at bedtime. And as for me, I don’t even bring a sweater…
BAD MEMORY! Well, you may not have always gotten your stories specifically at bedtime, but I spent many many hours reading books to you and Joey. Don’t you remember the extensive collection, some which we still have, like practically ALL the Berenstain Bears, many Dr. Seuss books, the Little Monster books, Where the Wild Things Are, Never Tease a Weasel, Alexander the Striped Horse, Mr. Willoby’s Christmas Tree, Busy Timmy, We Help Daddy, The Monster at the End of this Book…need I go on? Like I said, maybe not always at bedtime, but you DID get stories. Of course, you and Joey were such early readers, you were probably reading your own stories shortly after kindergarten. But you DID have stories read to you!
Yeah, now that I think about it I remember…but like you said, I was such an early reader that having stories read TO me was a very long time ago. I’ve been reading on my own since I was a youngin’. And also, generally, when I hear someone say “Tell me a story” I think of those images of someone TELLING a story, you know? Like back in the day when they would make up a story off the top f their head or tell it without a book. Because thats what I see in movies and such, ya know?
