DRY TOWN

Up until only a few months ago, liquor could not be purchased on Sundays in Tuscaloosa. The matter was recently put to the local voters, and all that has now changed. However, there are only certain hours on Sundays when you can buy beer and wine in the local grocery stores.

Here is a shot I took a few weeks ago, in a local Publix. I took this shot, because I found the message a bit confusing. Of course I understand what the sign is SUPPOSED to be saying, but if you look at it closely, read it precisely as it is written, you might come to the conclusion that you have a small nine and a half hour window EACH WEEK for stocking up on your booze!

Might I suggest, after the big words “BY LAW,” something along the lines of: On Sundays, beer & wine sold only between…” I don’t think that would be quite as confusing.

Okay, maybe I’m being a bit of a Grammar Nazi. Can’t help it. This sign is just poorly worded. Of course, this is by no means the most poorly worded sign I have ever seen. It’s just the most recent.

BEAUTIFUL MORNING

Yesterday morning when I put the trash out for pickup, I looked up in the sky and saw a rainbow..a full arc rainbow, going right over our house. When I went inside and looked out the window to the backyard, I saw a hummingbird at the feeder. So my life is full of rainbows and hummingbirds. It makes me stop, take a breath, and say “Thank you, Lord!” It’s all so lovely.

Now, I didn’t get to write about this yesterday, because I was running out of time and had to get to work. Same as today. And one more thought: when you log into your personal journal, and use the password from your WORK computer, maybe the job is getting a bit stressful. Yes, we are entering our busiest time of the year. But I wouldn’t say I’m stressed. Not yet, anyway. But it’s good to have a job, and it’s good to have pleasant co-workers, and a great boss! So again I say…”Thank you, Lord!”

??

I just saw a commercial for a new product. Apparently Hershey’s is now making their famous “Kiss” candies with a new and exciting ingredient….air! Yep, that’s right. They infuse the chocolate with air, so that it’s….fluffier, I guess? But still the same size as a regular Hershey’s Kiss (Again, I’m guessing, because I haven’t seen the product yet, only the commercial.) But if that’s the case, then what they’re doing is using less chocolate to make the same item…and in all likelihood, charging us the same price! And somehow, we are supposed to think this is a good thing?

In other news…yesterday morning I was listening to some of my new music, and heard a song that begins with the word “Girl.” And it made me wonder: how many songs are there that begin with the word “Girl”? We start with the classic Beatles song simply entitled “Girl” and then I think of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” that was by Neil Diamond or Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, can’t remember which. (Boy, I’m really going back in time here, aren’t I!) And I also think of “The Girl from Inpanema” (Okay, I had to cheat and look that one up for the spelling…) But talk about classic! I always loved that song.

I know there are lots more, but right now I’ve got to get ready for work. Maybe I’ll think of some more during the day. And if anyone reads this and thinks of some, please feel free to add by clicking the “Leave a Comment” button below!

SIGN OF THE TIMES

Went into Home Depot this week to buy a light bulb, and here’s what I saw:

I know it’s a little silly, Christmas stuff early in October. I know it’s all about retail, extending the buying season, promoting commerce. But hey! It makes me smile. So I’m okay with it.

I’m not one of those people who likes to overbuy and overdecorate for the Christmas season. In fact, this year we may not even put up a tree. Traditionally, if I buy Christmas stuff at all, it’s on December 26, at 50% off, so there’s not much chance of me breaking the budget on Christmas do-dads. But there is a very good chance that I’m going to get that warm fuzzy feeling inside, everytime I see the signs of Christmas surrounding me, whether it’s in the stores, the neighborhoods, on TV, wherever and whenever those signs might show up — even as early as October!

BIG WEEKEND

It’s 6:30 in the morning, and I just heard a huge plane going overhead. People are beginning to arrive for the weekend. We’ll be hearing planes coming in all day today and early tomorrow. This is the beginning of Homecoming Weekend at the University with the #2 football team in the country. Alabama is steeped in football tradition, and fans and alumni would arrive for Homecoming weekend, even if we weren’t currently second in the nation. It’s just a big deal, and a lot of fun. And there’s nothing wrong with fun.

In other news for this weekend, tonight we are planning to post/publish our 8th episode of The Drawing Room, our Dark Shadows podcast. It’s amazing to me how much we have improved the quality of this broadcast in only eight episodes! It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks, and even though Russ and I may be….well, if not “old,” at least “older,” we are having a lot of fun learning all kinds of things about the world of podcasting. And once again I say…there’s nothing wrong with fun.

Finally, this weekend I am also planning to do a good cleanup and rearranging of furniture in the front room. This room is the “catch-all,” and stuff just seems to pile up in there. It’s gotten to the point where I sort of feel it will be difficult to deal with all the stuff, unless I completely rearrange all the furniture. It will give me a good excuse to take everything out the room, sort through it, and put it back in again. Plus, I’m hoping to create an area where we can have another desk in the house. With all our computers and all our projects, another desk would be a good idea!

Well! Looks like a big weekend coming up! Lord willing and the creek don’t rise…lots of fun, and getting stuff done. (I’ll post before and after pics of the room renovation…if it turns out good!)

LATE GIFT

I’m very excited today. I’m expecting a late birthday gift in the mail. Joey says he has mailed me some music I’ve been hoping to get, and it might come in today. It’s a new band I’ve discovered, Placebo, and I’ve been listening to them on You Tube, but looking forward to having a disc I can take along with me in the car.

I remember that I found Placebo when Mary texted me, “Hey! I was looking at this band on You Tube, and I somehow ran into this other band, Placebo, and they sound like something you would like, check them out!” So that’s how I found Placebo. And I think that somehow (though I can’t for the life of me remember how!) Placebo led me to Fall Out Boy.

So the music goes on and on….

And now Mary has told me about another band she found on You Tube, which she says reminds her of Abney Park, which is another band she turned me on to a while back, and they are now one of my favorite bands. I have all their music in my Windows Media Player at work, and some days I just open that file and listen all day, over and over.

But today is not Abney Park, today is not Fall Out Boy, today is not even Al Stewart! Today is Placebo. I hope. Looking forward to looking in the mailbox this afternoon when I get in from work.

I love days when there is something to look forward to.

FALL OUT BOY

I love finding new music. Sometimes I come a little late to the party, but…better late than never! If I’m understanding this correctly, this band, Fall Out Boy, has already disbanded. But they’ve left behind a number of really fun music videos, and tons of good music. Here’s a taste, for those who are so inclined:

DISCLAIMER

I’m getting a little tired of seeing these disclaimers all over TV, you know the ones I mean: an advertisement for a new car driving down a curvy mountain road and in the small print below: “Professional Driver on a closed course. Do not attempt.” People riding bicycles…by standing up on the seat! A chef cutting chicken with a sharp knife to put in a taco: “Professional. Do not attempt.” Honestly.

Look. Some things are obviously dangerous. Do we really need to be told, over and over again, not to try something that appears ill-advised? Are people really so studid that…? Wait. Don’t answer that.

My problem is, it’s causing a lot of visual clutter. It’s almost like…nagging, wouldn’t you say? Why do we constantly have to be reminded of the blatantly obvious?

This is what I suggest: ONE TIME, the President gets on National TV and makes a statement more or less to the effect of “Hey! Listen up, people! TV and movies are NOT real life. If you see something stupid on TV or in a movie and then you try it and get hurt…oh, well, you’re on your own. From this point on everyone needs to take personal responsibility for their own actions. Got it? Okay.

“Oh yeah…and one more thing, people: hot chocolate….is HOT.”

Nuff said.

“SWAGGA”

It’s been a good afternoon for Alabama football. We beat Arkansas by a very respectable margin, and better than that, we played well. Last time I wrote about football, I noted that our new quarterback exhibited “poise.” Now I’m noting that not only our quarterback, but the entire team, seems to have developed that elusive quality of “swagga.” (By that I mean “swagger,” but Russ assures me that “swagga” is an acceptable representation of the term.)

Earlier in the week I was listening to Shaun Alexander, one of our former football stars, being interviewed on the radio, and he said “This team certainly has talent, they just lack swagger…they all need to believe ‘Hey! I’m the guy, I can get this done!'” Or something like that.

Well, I think maybe we are there. Or at the very least, getting there.

As Russ says, “I think we have a football team!”

DOCTOR VISIT

Went to the doctor the other day for the annual physical and got a “clean bill of health.” He told me my sugar, cholesterol, liver, kidneys and everything else was just fine. About the worst he could say was that my blood pressure is “borderline high.” But then he added, “But with that cholesterol, you’re at a low risk for heart disease, so I wouldn’t worry about it.”

All good news of course. I mentioned to him that I thought my cholesterol would be high, because the night before we had hamburgers for dinner, and with my birthday just three days earlier, it had been a week of celebrating—too much going out to eat, cookies, cake, and a bottle of wine. He said, “Ahh! Celebrate your birthday! You’ve got….what? 34 of them left….so enjoy your birthdays!”

I thought it was odd that he said 34. Not 30, or 35, which would be a nice round number. It gave me a little chill and made me wonder…does he know something I don’t know? Can he look at my blood work and my chest X-ray and my EKG and predict EXACTLY how long I will live?

Or is he just being a jokester?

I wouldn’t mind if he had some inside track on how long I’m going to live. Another 34 years puts me at 88…a good, long respectable time.

I just hope I can get my blood pressure down a bit before I get there.
