BACK TO THE EGG – ACCOUNTABILITY

I’m excited because this past week I’ve begun to once again make serious strides towards losing weight and getting healthy. I have a number of strategies I’m using, some old, and some new. One of my strategies, in order to help keep myself “honest,” is to re-activate my old LJ, Back To The Egg, where I like to keep track of my weight loss/health improvement progress.

It’s been a real on again/off again thing over the last several years. Well, I’m “on” again, and I invite anyone who is reading here to visit that journal at any time to see how I’m doing, if you’re interested in that kind of thing.

Hopefully it will serve as an encouragement to me to know that there MIGHT be other people in the world keeping track of how I’m doing. When you fail silently, that’s one thing, but no one wants to fail publicly. This strategy is all about accountability.

To see how I’m progressing with my Get Healthy Goals, please visit me at:

And please feel free to comment, either here or there. I need all the encouragement I can get! 🙂

LOST

Russ and I have been watching Lost. We watch it on DVD, one season at a time. Right now we are in the middle of season five, and six is the last one. This is the kind of show where the further along you get, the more questions you have. It’s hard for me to believe at this point that a day will ever come when we sit back and say, “Ah ha! Now all our questions are answered!”

Our plan is that once we have watched the whole thing through, we’re going to begin again at the beginning. And on this second watching, we’re going to WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN!!!! We’re going to write down everything that HAPPENS, and who all the characters are, and how they know each other, and we’re also going to keep an ongoing list of QUESTIONS. As we find satisfactory answers to these questions, we’ll knock them off the list.

The goal, of course, would be to come to the end of the sixth season with no questions unanswered. As I said, it’s hard to believe that is going to happen. I think that right now, not only are there questions to which we do not know the answer, but there are probably a huge number of questions we have even forgotten were ever asked.

Our main, overriding question, though, is this: when the writers/producers started presenting Lost, did they know what in blazes they were doing? Could they see the end of it all, even when they were creating the very first episode? Is there some method to this madness? Will it all, in fact, tie together in the end? Or is this all just a happy accident, and will there be many loose ends left flying in the wind, when all is said and done?

Oh, I just hope this much: I hope that we don’t end up with a “And Then I Woke Up” kind of ending. I hope somebody is not dreaming this, or Hurley is not imagining it all from the mental institution. If that’s all it is, I’m going to be very disappointed.

Anyway, if you are a fan of Lost, and know more than I do at the moment, please do not spoil. I’m not looking for answers at the moment (except in the episodes themselves). Basically, I’m just venting some frustration over this show, which is just about the most complicated and demanding entertainment I have ever had the fun of enjoying.

ELEPHANT TEAPOTS

Last week I had opportunity to go into the campus bookstore, which of course has a lot more than just books, and I saw these delightful teapots:

I adore them both, but I think I am partial to the one on the right, with the flatter back. Family tradition says that an elephant with its trunk in the upright position is good luck, so these guys are definitely going on my Christmas list! What a nice addition to my small but useful teapot collection!

SUMMER READING LIST

Yesterday I finished reading C.S. Lewis’ Perelandra. At some point in the future I will move on to reading the third book in this trilogy, That Hideous Strength. I first read these books in college, so this is a re-reading for me. There is something comforting about going back to the old favorites. It’s like saying hello again to old friends.

But new friends are nice too. Next on my reading list is the latest Cat Who mystery, which I’ve already started. Of course this book is also part of a series, so to some extent, also like an old friend. I’m also looking forward to the next Bloody Jack book (bound to be a rollicking good time!) Also coming up soon on my summer reading list, I have decided to finally read the last book in the Left Behind series, as well as the last book in the Series of Unfortunate Events. How is it that I worked my way through 11 or 12 volumes in each of these series and somehow never got around to the last story in each? I don’t know. Maybe I just hate to see a good thing end.

As I’m writing this, it occurs to me that even my planned “new” reading has a healthy dose of the familiar to it. I need a new book to read, something completey different.

Any suggestions? One request I would make, if you suggest something: let it be a freestanding work, NOT part of a series. I think I’ve got enough series going on at the moment, thank you!

CARBS???

Do you, like me, find it just a wee bit disingenuous when your salad dressing bottle proudly proclaims , “Still only 1 gram CARBS per serving”? Carbs? Really? You mean all this time I should have been concerned with how many carbs I was getting in my salad dressing?

Where have I been? I must have missed that boat.

Writer’s Block: Childhood Memories As A Kid

What is my favorite childhood memory of summertime?

Family picnics. Big family picnics, in our backyard, or any of our aunt and uncle’s backyards. Playing kickball with all my cousins in the middle of the street. Toasting marshmallows. Late nights catching lightning bugs. These are magical memories.

Of course, there is one specific memory that springs to mind immediately, above all others. One summer morning, the party was to be at our house, which made it extra special. This also meant we needed to go down to the store to get the refreshments. The way I remember it, I accompanied my dad to a small “mom and pop” type corner store. Going with my dad on this trip made the day even more special. And then, on top of everything else, I saw something at this corner beverage store that caught my eye and would not let go. It looked something like this:

This is the icon for White Rock beverages, which I’m not sure if it’s around any more, but at that time, when I was a kid, I guess you (by “you” I mean “my family”) only got White Rock when it was an extremely special ocassion. (Not like nowadays, when kids drink soda with every meal.) So…We were getting some White Rock beverages. But it wasn’t just the fact that we were getting soda that had me feeling so happy and excited. It was also…the beauty, and absolute magical quality of the picture on the label.

I remember being captivated by this icon, and now I’m trying to figure out what it was that made it so appealing. At first glance, I might say, “Well, look at her! She’s topless!” Your average kid in the 1960’s didn’t get to see too much in the way of nudity, (again, I say, not like nowadays…)so seeing this image must have been something out of the ordinary, something that would make an impression, something I would remember. But honestly, until I dug up this image on the internet this afternoon, I had completely forgotten that the fairy was half-naked.

What I do remember, though, is being intrigued by the beauty of the image, the appeal of the freshness of “Nature” in the rock and the water, and probably to a greater degree, the magical quality of the fact that the woman leaning over the rock had wings, was a Fairy, was “otherworldly,” supernatural.

When I think about it now, the whole idea of fairies, and otherworldliness had till that time probably been confined to my storybooks. But this was not for children. This was a product that was to be bought and consumed by big people. As such, this may have been my first experience of the colliding of the adult and childhood worlds. And that, perhaps, was what fascinated me most of all.

Am I reading too much into this? Maybe so. But it does kind of make sense. At any rate, I still like the picture, still think it’s beautfiful. And for me, the image of the White Rock fairy will always be all wrapped up in my most magical memories of what Summertime is all about.

VISITORS!

Yesterday John and Karin visited with the kids, and we went out to a nice restaurant and had a good time. It was great seeing them and catching up, and hearing all about their book business. One day Russ and I may try to “kick it up a notch,” but I don’t think we’ll ever be able to do it to the level that they do. Well, maybe when we’re retired.

Anyway, John-John and Gabriela were fascinated with the cats, and spent about ten minutes looking all over the house, wondering where they could be. I don’t think they ever found the cats, so I’m posting them a picture here. Hey, kids! Here are the cats!

Thanks for the flowers and wine! I wish we could see you guys more often. Southwest tickets are only $79 each way right now, so it might be possible to squeeze in a quick visit later in the summer. With Mary moving to Lutz (LOOTZ, not LUHTZ) I’m hoping to make another trip soon!

Writer’s Block: Acquired taste

It’s not really that weird, but I like raisins in a green salad. I probably picked that up from my parents, who also add apples to a green salad. I like that too, but my stomach is not always in agreement with the apples. Of course, my claim to fame is my college creation: the Poison Pizza. American chhese and ketchup on a slice of white bread, heated til the cheese melts. Haven’t had a REAL Poison Pizza in years. As you get older and wiser and have more money, you tend to use higher quality ingredients like provolone, tomato sauce and French bread. No longer quite so “poisonous.”

SENSE OF HUMOR

Russ is a funny guy. Just now, I was looking online at the Bose music system. Apparently they have a system that allows you to connect *wirelessly* to the music on your computer, and have it come out of the Bose unit. I was telling Russ about it, and I said, “And here’s something else good about it: it’s only $549!”

Without skipping a beat, Russ replies, “Why don’t we just hire a singer to run around from room to room?”

He’s always coming out with gems like that.
